Postman wins compensation following work accident
A man, who had been employed as a postman, was recently successful in his work accident compensation claim against his former employer, following an accident he suffered in which he incurred serious damage to his spine. The accident came about as he was attempting to unload some packages, which had been improperly loaded, from his van.
The man had taken on the job after having been made redundant at the height of the recession. He had, however, never received any proper training upon taking on the job. He had alerted his employers to the potential health & safety risks of this fact more than once; however, they continued to take no action in providing him with the proper training to ensure his safety.
Close to Christmas, when his van was particularly heavily loaded, due to the demands of the Christmas season, he found that, in trying to extricate one package, an entire stack of packages fell onto him, knocking him to the floor and leaving him with a broken spine, for which he had to undergo surgery and a recovery period that lasted several weeks.
He later got into contact with his union, who advised him that he could make a work accident compensation claim, as his employer had clearly demonstrated negligence in neglecting to provide him with proper training. He has since been successful in his claim, having been awarded what is reportedly a significant sum in compensation.
