22 died as a result of work accidents in the North West
Despite ongoing advice from the HSE, the number of fatalities as a result of work accidents during 2008-2009 has remained in level with the same figures of the previous year.
According to recent figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), 22 workers in the North West died during 2008- 2009 as a result of a work accident.
The figures revealed the same number of deaths through accidents at work as statistics from the previous 12 months.
The HSE stated that many of the fatalities could have been prevented.
David Sowerby, HSE regional director for the North West, said: “The fact that 22 people failed to come home from work in the North-west last year because of avoidable safety failings is a terrible tragedy.
There are families throughout the region who have been cruelly robbed of a loved one in incidents that, in many cases, were entirely preventable.”
He stated that workers and employers should ensure they take adequate safety precautions to reduce the number of personal injuries.
He said: “We owe it to them and to the workers who have lost their lives to continue to put safety first.
I don't want to be talking in 12 months time about a tragic rise in the number of workers who have been killed simply doing their job.”
