Fears harboured over work accidents and deaths

The trade union Siptu has revealed that the real number of
work accidents and work related deaths in the republic is actually 23 times higher than the official figure.
The Industrial Union Company said that 1,400 people die every year as a result of work injuries, accidents and deaths. Work disease and illness were also another worrying concern. The official statistic however is around 60 deaths, which is far less than the real number.
This huge cover up is due to a policy by the authorities to only record work deaths caused by accidents in the work environment as work related.
Siptu safety and health advisor Sylvester Cronin urged the Government to acknowledge all work deaths no matter the circumstances.Updated on 11/10/2008
