Increase in UK work accidents

New figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has revealed that the number of workers who died in work accidents in the south west of England in 2007 increased by nearly a quarter for 2008.

The HSE exposed that 28 people died in the year ending March 2008, this was four more than in the previous 12 months.  The HSE has labelled the 23% rise in work death as “disappointing.”

The HSE distinguishes the south west as Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.

The study displayed that work deaths and work injuries were at its highest in jobs that involved construction, manufacturing and agriculture.

The south west also recorded nearly 240,000 work injuries, with falls being one of the prominent problems.

The HSE last year saw 70 prosecutions take place due to work safety regulation breaches.  The HSE said it has been working with unions and local councils in a bid to reduce work accidents.Updated on 03/11/2008
