Work accidents high in the South-East

Latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive (
HSE) have suggested that someone breaks or fractures a bone at work in the south east every 25 minutes.
In particular, Wokingham came in for much criticism with the organisation contending that accidents at work cost Wokingham businesses more than £1.2 million in 2007.
Figures from the organisation show there were 58 major slips, trips and falls in Wokingham in 2006/07, costing employers in the local community £1,276,000.
The HSE has since launched the ‘Shattered Lives’ campaign to highlight the devastating consequences of simple slips, trips, falls and work accidents.
It is aimed at offer support and guidance to employers and employees in the construction, buildings and plant maintenance, food manufacturing and retail industries where the incidence of injuries resulting from slips, trips and falls in highest.
The scheme is aimed to bring awareness to the long reaching problems of a ‘minor’ accident or slip, with a relatively small injury often leading to serious damage in the long run or even death. In the south east last year, 5,695 people were injured and there was one fatality as a result of a slip, trip or fall, which happened in Slough.Updated on 5/28/2008
