Recession leads to rise in whiplash claims

Figures produced by The Association of British Insurers (ABI) showed insurance companies have seen a rise in the number of personal injury claims put forward last year.

The most common reasons for making a compensation claim are road traffic accidents, whiplash claims, back strains or slips, trips and falls.

Experts have suggested that the economic downturn has been a great motivator for the increase in the number of accident and whiplash claims.

Department of Transport reports reveal there was a slide of nine per cent in the number of people with major and minor personal injuries.

The most popular methods of claiming last year turned out to be no win no fee claims, which reached 9.6 billion last year and is 8.8 billion more than two years previously.

The reports also show that people are now more open about making a compensation claim for minor personal injuries, like back strains or minor whiplash claims, as opposed to only making a compensation claim for more severe and lasting problems.
