1 in 3 UK drivers text while driving

A popular website recently released the findings of their unofficial survey of UK drivers, which are not very encouraging.

The website was helped by a popular GPS navigation developer, who found that almost a third of drivers surveyed confessed to texting when driving.

This was despite the fact that over 90 percent of motorists are aware of the fact that the practice is illegal and the result of getting caught is three points on their licence and a fine.

Research by the RAC found that text messaging while driving slows down reaction times by as much as 35 per cent.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, believes it quadruples the driver's risk of ending up in a crash. This can lead to broken bones, paralysis, whiplash claims or death of the driver or others.

The GPS navigation developer say that despite the ban on drivers texting while driving, over one fifth of cars still don’t have the necessary hands-free equipment fitted.

Their research found that 22 percent of the drivers surveyed, did not have a built-in hands-free kit or mobile phone cradle in their car or Bluetooth equipment to use with their device.
