Man cut free from car in crash suffers whiplash

Firefighters had to cut a man free from his car last night after a road accident in Torquay.

The driver of an Audi A4 was trapped in the wreckage of the vehicle following the two-vehicle crash in Ellacombe. The accident happened at 6.30pm at the junction of All Saint's Road and Windsor Road.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof of the car and free the trapped man. It was found that the man had suffered suspected back and neck injuries.

The commander of the rescue team said: "There was no visible injury but in collisions like these we have to treat it as a possible back injury and whiplash."

He said they brought the man out flat on a long spinal board and put a neck collar on him before taking him to the hospital by ambulance.

It is understood the other driver of the other car involved, a Land Rover Discovery, was unhurt in the crash.

There were very few eye witnesses who saw the actual crash.

The man's family is currently awaiting his recovery and there is no clear indication whether he will be filing a whiplash claim for compensation against the other driver.
