Road crash victims saved by airbags

A victim of a two-car road crash in the Isle of Wight, said how her car’s airbags saved her and her daughters’ lives and how they were lucky to have not been killed, unlike her son, who died in a separate road crash whilst on his motorbike on Christmas Day 2004.

Sue Goode, 51, a businesswoman, was driving a Suzuki Baleno from Barding towards Newport when it collided with a BMW convertible, near a viewpoint car park.

Mrs Goode’s daughter suffered a serious burn personal injury, whereas Mrs Goode suffered extensive bruising and whiplash injury.

Mrs Goode said: “As the air bag hit me in the chest, it winded me and I couldn’t breathe. The car was full of smoke and I fell out of the car fighting for my breath while I was in and out of consciousness.

“The impact injury to Nicola’s chest caused her teeth to embed in her top lip and she broke a tooth. When the airbag exploded it took the whole top layer of skin away. Thankfully, it will heal. But I’d rather we’d had the airbag and been injured by it than lose a daughter.”

The male BMW driver, 42, and female passenger, 36, both from Newport, were uninjured but shaken in last week’s accident and went to Mrs Goode and her daughter’s assistance. It is unknown if a whiplash claim will be filed.
