Volatile situations are becoming an ever present feature of UK roads, it appears that tensions are higher, people are more stressed and this is coming out in the way they adhere to road etiquettes, or not as the case may be. Unfortunately the invariable result when drivers are under stressful conditions is an increase to the number of accidents occurring.
As we nestle comfortably in what many have considered to be a ‘compensation culture’ the compensation claims surrounding car accidents have increased exponentially with the main injury being that of whiplash.
Direct Line Car Insurance have supported the ABI’s report in regard to the ‘whiplash epidemic’ that is plaguing UK drivers, some 1,200 people a day put forth a whiplash claim after they have suffered whiplash injuries in a car collision. One of the main reasons being cited for the steady increase is the act of tailgating.
A Direct Line spokesperson Frances Browning commented that “tailgating has a huge impact on road safety”. They also stated that they “fully support measures which aim to educate drivers of the risks involved” when bullying people to go faster by tailgating. This should be of the utmost importance, especially when tailgating accounts for 7 per cent of road traffic accidents in the UK. Updated on 17/11/2008
