Crash-for-cash claim £8 million

Car drivers will be glad to know that the police have been successful in breaking up a
car insurance scam gang. The gang had been successful in collecting a whopping £8 million from various insurers after staging fake accidents or by ‘forcing’ other road users to crash into them. One of the ways the fraudsters would secure their winnings was by disabling their brake lights just prior to stopping sharply and usually without reason, forcing the driver behind them to crash into their rear.
Following this the gang would then submit hugely inflated insurance claims, with a lot of instances fabricating whiplash injuries. By submitting falsified accounts of the extent of the damage to their vehicles they were able to make even larger claims. In order to get as much from insurers as possible they would also submit claims for fictional passengers, again whiplash being their injury of choice. The police of the Greater Manchester area suspect that hundreds of drivers were forced to claim from their insurers in the “crash-for-cash” swindle.Updated on 27/10/2008
