Norwich student’s public liability claim after fire
A student from Norwich has recently begun her public liability claim against her former landlord, following a fire at the flat which she rented, which resulted in her suffering 80% burns.
The fire, which the young woman’s lawyer characterised as having “destroyed the life” of his client, occurred in April of last year. Her lawyer further went on to state that the landlord’s negligence was directly responsible for the fire: “It is plain that there was negligence in failing to have adequate fire precautions, smoke alarms, fire-fighting equipment and emergency lighting which caused her and her co-tenants a risk of death or serious injury.”
He went on to say: “Had any of the aforementioned steps been taken, she would have been alerted to the fire and would have escaped without suffering the injuries that she did.”
The landlord has already been sentenced to 21 months for 14 breaches of health & safety; his assets are currently frozen.
The student’s lawyer has stated that he fully expects his client to receive as much as £2 million pounds in personal injury compensation in the case. The outcome remains to be seen.
