Public liability essential for agricultural work

A leading insurer has advised all agricultural workers to purchase public liability, as the financial downturn is presenting new risks, causing the sector to change.

Public liability insurance protects businesses in the event of a third party personal injury claim. It could therefore be essential cover for the agricultural industry as it diversifies.

As such businesses try to keep their head above the financial waters due to weak trade conditions, many agricultural workers have chosen to expand their firms.

As a result, insurers have pointed out the importance of these employees revaluating their insurance policies to combat any extra hazards that come with such expansion.

Phil Grace, the liability risk manager at the insurance company said: "The sector continues to develop and is moving from traditional bed-and-breakfasts and retail, to sports and recreation, resulting in increases in the nature of the risks, in addition to the number and type of people exposed to them."

Grace added why public liability cover is so vital: "A typical commercial package will provide these, but it is vital that your broker and insurer have a clear idea of what you do, and that you update them with any changes – for example, if you decide to offer a service such as bed-and-breakfast, shooting, or recreational quad-biking, as this may affect your premium."
