Professional negligence claim by widow
A woman who lost her husband on the operating table due to a mistake made by the medical staff attending to his operation is now preparing to make a compensation claim for professional negligence against those responsible.
Her husband had undergone the operation after having been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. He had to undergo a laparoscopic procedure in order to remove the cancerous part from his bowel. In the aftermath of the operation, however, the man’s bowel began leaking, fluid and gas filling up the man’s pelvis. He died in November of 2008, a few short weeks after his operation.
Following his death, there was an inquiry, which brought to light the medical negligence of those performing the operation: the consultant had delayed the man’s CT scan exploratory laparoscopy for some time after he first began to complain of his medical problems, with the CT scan not having been conducted until two whole weeks after his surgery. Even after this test had been made, no further medical procedures were ever carries out.
The hospital’s spokesman stated that they have already offered their apologies to the deceased’s family. The outcome of the professional negligence trial remains to be seen.
