Professional negligence leads of lift accident

A Metropolitan Police member has received a substantial sum in compensation when the professional negligence of her employers led to a work accident.

The woman suffered from personal injury to the neck and back as a result of the accident in May 2008.

The accident took place when a lift she was in with her husband plunged seven floors to the ground.

The couple boarded the lift to reach the 8th floor in the Victoria Building of New Scotland Yard when it plunged to the ground at speed.

Her husband was forced to pull open the lift doors to yell for help as they were then stuck in the lift for 40 minutes before they were released. The female had to take 3 months off work and undergo intensive physiotherapy.

She also had to undergo treatment for an anxiety disorder after she was left with a fear of getting into lifts.

Her injury lawyers argued that the Metropolitan Police were guilty of negligence as they failed to ensure the lift was safe for use and that the alarm system was working during an emergency.

Her employers admitted liability and settled the claim out of court.
