Multi-million compensation for professional negligence

A young woman from Linby who was left disabled at birth due to medical staff's professional negligence, has won a multi-million pound compensation claim award.

The now 21-year-old received the award in the High Court.

The medical negligence occurred when doctors failed to ensure that her mother received a rubella vaccination before becoming pregnant.

As a result, the baby was born with congenital rubella syndrome, said her injury lawyers.

This personal injury means that the girl will require intensive and full-time care for the rest of her life.

Previously, Nottingham City Council was looking after the cost of her treatment but now NHS East Midlands, which has already admitted liability, will pick up the costs.

Her injury lawyers said: "This case has established that disabled people in similar position are able to claim compensation from the wrongdoer and not have to rely on the local council."

They also added that the payout is structured in such a way so to ensure that the girl's lifelong care is provided for.

"Instead of the traditional award of a lump sum of compensation, which would have amounted to more than £5 million, she will instead receive payments every year for the rest of her life."
