Soldier could lose compensation

A soldier who put in a compensation claim of £25,000 after he suffered serious personal injury in service, may lose his payout.

The problem started when he was spotted carrying the Carling Cup at Wembley. The Manchester United fan, and a private of 2 Para, was left paralysed in Afghanistan almost two years earlier.

He was left paralysed when shrapnel was embedded in his spine. He was initially told he would never be able to walk again and underwent treatment on the nerve damage, after which he is now able to walk with just a stick.

In February, the 20-year-old was invited to take the trophy on to the pitch. He was due to receive the compensation claims payout but has since been told by his insurance firm that his accident claim is being reviewed.

"Someone from the firm has seen me walk out on to the pitch. I don't know why they have tried to do it ... words cannot express how angry I am," said the private.

A company spokesman said: "We are looking into the case. We have no desire to wriggle out of paying a claim if it is due."

Veterans Minister Kevan Jones said: "As a matter of urgency I will be asking the company to explain their decision."
