Firm is fined for employee's garage injury

A Leeds contractor has been fined £12,000 after its failures in safety measures resulted in an employee suffering serious facial injuries while revamping a garage.

The 35 year old worker was handling an overhead roller shutter door at the Hunslet garage when a cable bolt sheared and smashed into his face.

As a result, the man has lost 99 % of the vision in his left eye, suffered serious injuries to his face and lost several teeth in the accident.

The man, from Bradford, was working for the contractors which had been hired to carry out refurbishments in March this year.

It is said that the extent of his personal injuries is very serious and he would need all the help for taking care of himself in future.

The firm has been fined £12,000 at Leeds Magistrates Court after they decided to plead guilty to three breaches of health and safety rules over the incident.

Leeds City Council was also awarded costs of £7,233.

It has come to notice that since the accident took place the company has taken several measures to improve its working, including using a specialist company to remove roller shutter doors.
