Personal injury awards in Ireland
The injuries board in Ireland recently exposed that during the first six months of 2008 4,652 personal injury claims were processed and resulted in €113 million in compensation claims.
The injuries board which was formerly known as the Personal Injuries Assessment Board stated that the half year figures displayed an increase in the average award amount. This increase rose from €22,057 in 2007 to €24,320.
The board therefore has seen a steady increase in personal injury claims. In 2005 there were only 951 reported cases, with a sum amount of €16 million in compensation. This then shot up to 8,208 in 2007, with a total of €181.04 million in compensation, eventually dramatically rising to 4,652 from January to July 2008 with half a year’s compensation amounting to €113 million.
The lowest award was reported to reach €1,000, whereas in contrast the highest reached €519,784. 87% of all personal injury cases are assessed by the Injuries Board. All personal injury claims in Ireland need to be processed through this board instead of the courts, however medical negligence is the only exclusion.
