E coli bug found

A hospital based in South London has been found to contain a ‘potentially fatal’ strain of E coli.  This has caused the institution to section of an area to safeguard premature babies.

The Hospital has been closed since mid-November after a strain of the E. Coli bug known as Extended-Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL) was found on the bodies of 13 newborn babies.  There were concerns that the bug could affect the babies internally if they undergo medical treatment such as an injection.

The Personal injury lawyer, who specialises in medical negligence cases, explained that: “Ten cases of the bacteria have been identified on the neonatal unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich. The ward has been closed to outside admissions since November 17 and will now remain closed until the outbreak has been dealt with.”

Compensation claims on the grounds of medical negligence can be made for the families of babies who have been affected by the bug and could amount to several thousands of pounds.
