Disabled girl wins compensation
As part of an interim settlement, a four year old girl left disabled due to medical negligence has won her compensation claim.
The family of the victim took legal action against the hospital on grounds of professional negligence and have secured €1.6 million.
The girl, from Dublin, was left with severe cerebral palsy due to circumstances surrounding her birth at the National Maternity Hospital.
During a trial this week at the High Court, the hospital accepted liability for the accident and the interim payment of €1.65 million was made on the grounds that the victim comes back to court for further payments.
In the proceedings, it was claimed the treatment given to the mother by the hospital was negligent and caused the baby to suffer hypoxic-ischaemic insult resulting in cerebral palsy.
The case was brought by the mother on behalf of her daughter.
