Woman sues hospital over medical negligence
A woman is planning to launch an accident claim against an NHS Trust, after one of the hospitals left medical forceps inside her during an operation.
The woman has received an apology from the trust after it was found that the surgeons left 7inch-long medical forceps inside her.
She was left in agony by the operation to remove her gall bladder, at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.
Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust apologised and said safety standards had been improved.
The 39-year-old nurse described her pain as "horrendous" and said she plans to launch a compensation claim.
"I couldn't believe something like this would happen in this day and age," she said.
She said that she underwent an MRI scan because of the pain, before an X-ray was taken to reveal the forceps were inside her.
Trust chief executive, John Rostill, said that the trust would like to apologise unreservedly to the woman for any pain or distress she has suffered, as a result of the medical negligence.
"We strive to provide the safest, highest quality care possible for all our patients, and in the 12 months since this extremely unusual incident we have taken a number of steps to further improve standards of safety," he said.
