Woman who lost finger to make compensation claim
A woman who lost a finger at Sunbury-on-Thames’ Kempton Park Racecourse last year is now set to make a compensation claim.
The woman, 37, suffered the accident while attempting to look out over a fence; her wedding ring caught on the fence, which led to her finger being torn off.
The woman had been looking for an ATM, having been directed to the area by staff at the racecourse: “I was trying to find a cash machine and I was directed down a footpath to one side of the course. I would never have gone down there otherwise.
“My hand was resting on the top of temporary fencing when my wedding ring caught on top. I was in hospital for 10 hours afterwards.”
The path has since been closed to the public. The woman states: “If it had been blocked off at the time, I would have never gone down there. My son and stepson both saw it happen and they were obviously traumatised.
“I have just finished therapy. I went into a bad depression as a result of what happened. It was a shock to the system.”
The woman’s injury lawyers are currently fighting her case; the racecourse, however, refuses to accept responsibility.
The racecourse’s managing director, has stated: “The matter is being dealt with by our respective lawyers and the racecourse accepts no liability.
“The fencing in question was standard Herras fencing. Clearly the health and safety of all Kempton Park visitors is always a top priority and this incident was not the fault of the racecourse.”
