Man abused by priest wins £15,000

A middle-aged man who attended a top Catholic schooling institution and was abused by a priest, has been awarded compensation.

The victim was molested by his teacher on several occasions at the Manchester based college in the 1970s.

The man, who is now in his mid 40’s, has been awarded an out of court settlement of £15,000, with the school.The man's injury lawyer described how it left him wracked with guilt and traumatised.

She said: "It had an impact on him as a young man. He was low, he couldn’t enjoy life at university and it affected his confidence at a time of life when most people are letting their hair down."

The man, who no longer lives in the city, said he felt a sense of shame and if he had done something about his own abuse, then maybe it would have stopped it happening to others.

In October 2008, the priest was jailed for nine years for ‘systematically’ sexually abusing a string of boys at the college.

Judge Clement Goldstone at Manchester Crown Court told him: “You systematically and sexually abused these boys, who were vulnerable and impressionable, and they were groomed by you for the purposes of your own sexual gratification.”
