Families of accident victims receive compensation

Parents of teenagers killed or injured in a car accident more than two years ago near Hesperus will receive half a million dollars in compensation after an out of court settlement.

The settlement was reached between La Plata County’s insurance carrier with the victims’ families through their personal injury lawyers.

Information regarding the settlement, known as the General Release, was made available earlier today at the request of newspaper.

The report revealed that the mother of a 16-year-old and another victim, 13, will be given a pay out of $150,000, while another parent will receive $50,000.

It was also stated that the mother of an 18-year-old victim is set to be paid $100,000.

Three of the children were killed the night of March 17, 2007 on Colorado Highway when a commercial truck driver veered off the right side of the road and broadsided an Isuzu Trooper parked in the driveway.

The teenagers were inside the Isuzu although an 11-year-old boy who was also inside the Isuzu survived with serious injuries.
