Widow compensated £250,000 for husband's mesothelioma death

The widow of a joiner, whose husband died from an asbestos related disease, has received £250,000 in compensation claims.

Her husband was diagnosed with mesothelioma in December 2007 after suffering from breathlessness.

The former shipyard worker was exposed to asbestos when working for a shipping company at Immingham Docks, Humberside, during the 1970s and 1980s.

He worked as a joiner where he was exposed to asbestos during the refitting of ships. He later worked as a self employed joiner and gardener before he became ill. He had hoped to continue working until he was 70.

The man had radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment after he was diagnosed with mesothelioma but his condition continued to deteriorate.

After an arduous battle with the illness he died in November 2008, leaving his wife and two adult children behind.

After his death his wife continued the work accident claim he had initiated. She said: “He started the compensation claim and wanted to know now that I would be financially secure.”

His injury lawyers said: “Mesothelioma is a notoriously aggressive disease. Because the process of claiming compensation had commenced during this client’s lifetime we were able to bring it to a successful outcome quickly for his family.”
