Prisoner could receive compensation claim after attack

It has emerged that a murderer could receive as much as £20,000 in compensation claims, after he was attacked in jail.

The personal injury occurred after his throat was slashed. The 36-year-old child killer needed emergency hospital treatment after he was allegedly attacked by a fellow inmate.

As a result, the criminal could attempt to sue the service by claiming authorities failed in their duty to protect him, the Prison Officers Association said.

Experts therefore believe he could win at least £10,000 in a professional negligence case, for the attack at HMP Frankland, in Co Durham. The payout will anger the public, especially as the parents of the two child victims were awarded just £11,000 each.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “A full lockdown search was planned last week for today which is currently under way.

“The search is likely to take two to three days during which every wing will be closed to enable the full search to be carried out. All staff members were briefed on the search this morning.”

Colin Moses, the chairman of the POA, stated: “I can imagine this getting in to a compensation debate and yet we will have to fight tooth and nail for compensation for our members.”Updated on 29/03/2010
