Council pays £600k in compensation claims

Cumbria County Council has revealed that they have paid out over £600,000 in compensation claims.

The compensation was paid out in 2009 for damage to cars caused by potholes.

More than half of the reported £600,000 was paid directly to people who had launched claims against the council.

The remainder amount was spent on legal fees to settle many of the accident claims.

The winter freeze in late 2009 has resulted in a higher than normal amount of ice and snow. This, in turn, led to a significant number of potholes forming on the roads across the UK.

With the increased number of potholes, there has been a sharp spike in damages to cars and also a rise in car accidents nationwide.

Cumbria County Council, along with many other councils across the country, set aside a large amount of money – three million pounds – to help cover the cost of road repairs.

Elsewhere, in the Worcestershire area, the local council has reported that more than four thousand dangerous holes were found on the roads.

Numerous councils, across the country, are now facing increased compensation claims with regards to damages and personal injuries caused by potholes.
