Family of injured boy wins compensation claim

The family of a 9-year-old boy has been awarded a substantial compensation claim payout.

The reward is for medical negligence, caused by hospital staff who deprived him of oxygen in his mother’s womb.

It was reported that the boy was born in distress at Arrowe Park hospital, after they failed to understand the medical records of his mother.

She was suffering from a fibroid which should have sent alarm bells ringing for the doctors. However, these signs were ignored and a short time after being sent home, the mother started to bleed.

The boy's delivery had to be rushed after his mother was taken back to hospital. The blunder has left him requiring constant care.

He now suffers from quadriplegia and cerebral palsy as a result of medical negligence, according to the claimant's injury lawyers. He also has problems with his sight and needs round-the-clock care.

A High Court decision in 2008 said that his mother was erroneously sent home after the scan, which detected the fibroid. After the delivery, she was forced to give up her work to look after him.

Her husband, who also provides a lot of assistance, said “This has been a long hard fight to secure his long term care.”
