Parents sue school
It has been revealed that parents have filed a compensation claim against a teacher who broke their son’s ankle while demonstrating a rugby tackle.
The personal injury occurred in September, at a Coventry school, and the parents have filed the accident claim from the city council.
The court action is one of 13 cases made against Coventry City Council in the past three years. The other claims focus on injuries occurred also on the school fields and playgrounds.
Also on the list is a case that began when a summer school visitor fell off a bouncy castle and one that occurred after a pupil slipped while competing in a hurdling event.
Jane Nellist, joint secretary of the Coventry branch of the National Union of Teachers, said there was “considerable concern” in the teaching community about possible litigation.
“Teachers are well aware and well versed in that sort of thing. I think it’s increasing across the board, whether you are in health, education or anything. People going to seek legal advice from solicitors is a much more common thing these days,” she commented.
