He went into cardiac arrest and the crash team were then called in to resuscitate the man.

He was prescribed with morphine and adrenaline and a defibrillator as a result.

However, just four days after the operation the man died after doctors were unable to continue further treatment.

According to the director and consultant surgeon at City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, Les Boobis, staff at the hospital had failed to give the man Heparin, a blood-clotting drug, until two days after the operation.

Boobis said: "We apologise to the family for our failures in ensuring that the correct measures were taken to reduce the risk of [the man] developing pulmonary thromboembolism - which was the cause of his death - and offer my sincere condolences on their loss."

The hospital agrees to compensate the family of the man as a result of their negligence.
