Following incidents in which three primary school pupils had their fingers trapped in heavy swing doors, two families have launched compensation claims against the city council.
Reports quoting the parents said the poor state of school, St John’s Primary in Portobello, contributed to the accidents.
The wounded children were taken to hospital for treatment and the council has ordered “finger guards” to be placed in all doors in the school to prevent further recurrence.
One of the injured pupils father described the state of the school as “appalling”.
Mark Telfer said his five-year-old son, Elliot, was very lucky to have escaped without losing his fingers, adding that the doors need to be replaced.
“I was absolutely appalled with the state of disrepair at the school, especially toilets where Elliot trapped his fingers,” said Mr Telfer.
In one of the other two incidents, which happened within the last year, a young girl reportedly had her fingertip reattached after it was trapped in a door.
While the two families are seeking compensation, Mr Telfer said he’s not seeking compensation but wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again. Updated on 18/11/2008
