Prison Warden’s compensation claim

A former warden who appealed for a
compensation claim for being tortured by the police 26 years ago has been awarded €186,349.87. Anthony Mifsud stated that this amount was “insignificant.”
Mr. Mifsud’s case is not an unusual one because former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff was awarded €838,574 in compensation, after the government decided to build a power station in Delimara close to his villa. As a result, Mintoff was awarded compensation for violation of his property rights.
In 1982, Mr Misfud was detained illegally and tortured whilst in police custody. He was not only wrongfully charged with corruption but also with alleged plans to escape from prison.
The two officers involved with beating Misfud were ordered to pay €186.349. Misfud stated that he agreed with the court’s first judgement that his human rights had been violated. However, he claimed that his compensation amount does not reflect all the violations.
