The eight occupants of the Passat varied in ages from youths to early 20s and were thought to be from the Inishowen area, including Clonmany, Ballyliffin and Buncrana.

The incident happened on a notorious stretch of road where accidents are common. It is thought that the Passat was involved in an earlier crash in a minor hit-and run collision.

The female driver of the other car suffered personal injury such as a broken wrist. It is unknown if she will file an accident claim.

The Passat then continued to travel on towards Buncrana where it was involved in the second smash. All eight were killed.

Garda believe that alcohol was not a contributing factor.
