Volvo aim for zero car accidents
Volvo has announced that their aim is to reduce the number of people killed in a car accident to zero by 2020.
The company have said their ultimate vision is to design cars that do not crash, but in the short term their goal is that, by 2020, no one in a Volvo should be killed or injured in a car crash. an Ivarsson, head of Safety Strategy at the Volvo Car Corporation, explained this vision: "We don't accept that people lose their lives in airplane accidents, so why should we regard car accidents as inevitable?"
Currently, it is estimated that around 1.2 million people around the world lose their lives each year on the road, while 50 million are injured. With the number of road users increasing each year, this number looks set to rise but Volvo have other ideas.
"Continuous research and enhancement of safety in and around our cars will be essential for achieving a safer driver environment and a collision-free future." Ivarsson explains. "In this aim we invite fruitful cooperation with authorities and the automotive industry," he added.
