Car accident claims cost council nearly £50,000

Bournemouth city council has had to pay out £51,000 in compensation claims since January 2007. Nearly 90% of these compensation claims are due to the councils own drivers being involved in car accidents.

The most expensive pay out was due to a lease car reversing into an “unusual vehicle” in July causing £9,168 worth of damage. Many other council drivers seem to have this similar problem with Bournemouth council having to shell out nearly £30,000 due to drivers colliding with fixed objects.

Bournemouth council's deputy leader, Cllr John Beesley, said: "As a local authority operating hundreds of vehicles to provide services to the local community it is inevitable that some incidents may occur.”

Yet whilst the council seem to be paying out on claims against their own drivers it seems that they are less willing to compensate the 23 trip and fall on council footpath claims that have been made against Bournemouth city council.
