Two men jailed for mass crash con

A court has heard how two men were involved in a ‘mini industry of dishonest claims’ after they staged more than 80 car accidents.

The con men have been accused of conspiracy to defraud at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

The pair ran a claims centre which managed accident claims based in Burnley. They are charged with conspiracy to defraud by staging the ‘crash-for-cash’ scams between January 2004 and December 2009.

They are alleged to have made profit by referring the drivers in the compensation claim cases - who were in on the conspiracy - to solicitors, filing false reports for hire cars, repairs and salvage operations.

However, the court was told that usually the cars involved in the collisions were in fact still road worthy and did not need to be repaired or recovered.

The three areas used for most of the staged crashes were Trafford Park, Handforth Dean and Burnley.
