War victim accident claims on the up
The number of accident claims filed by Afghan civilians has increased, the Ministry of Defence stated.
The number of compensation successfully given to the relatives of civilians killed in blunders made by British forces has trebled.
At least 105 Afghans won their accident claims for compensation according to figures released in a document. The number in 2009 was three times more than the previous year.
Last year two hundred and thirty cases were made, however most were refused. The figure is a sharp rise from the law cases that were made in 2008.
In response to the new figures, the MoD released a statement saying that they make every effort in avoiding civilian causalities and that any incident involving casualties was a “matter of regret.”
The service also pointed out that just because claims were paid out – it did not reflect the fact that UK forces were responsible for the errors.
