Machine injury at work
It has been revealed that a male worker has lost his finger in a work accident.
Reedley Magistrates Court heard that the incident occurred after the employee became trapped in the machinery at a tool manufacturing site.
The labourer was using a piece of emery cloth to reduce the size of a metal component on a metalworking lathe.
During the process the cloth became tangled and pulled his right arm into the machine. He was wearing a glove which pulled his hand further into the mechanism.
As a result, the firm was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay costs of £1,000 after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
HSE Inspector Imran Siddiqui stated that the business “should have provided a safe system of work and the appropriate training” and added“I hope manufacturers learn lessons from this case so that no more workers suffer permanent injuries in the future.”
It is unknown if the man will file an accident claim.
