Man Paralysed In Car Crash Awarded £2.25 Million

A bricklayer from Cornwall who was left severely disabled following a car accident in which one of his friends died, will receive more than £2 million in accident claim compensation.

The man, aged 26, was a backseat passenger in the car being driven by his friend, when it crashed in Cornwall in October 2003.

The driver of the car lost control of the vehicle when it was travelling between 60mph and 70mph and spun into oncoming traffic.

His friend died at the scene of the crash while the man suffered personal injuries so serious that he is now paraplegic. He remained in hospital for months after the accident to receive treatment.

An out-of-court compensation claim settlement for the victim was agreed with his friend’s insurers and the package was approved by the High Court.

Injury lawyers representing the man had been set to argue that his friend was liable for the crash because he drove with excessive speed and did not react fast enough to avoid an obstruction.

The man may also be entitled to annual payments and this will be decided in a future hearing.
