Harms of driving uninsured awareness campaign
A new campaign with the theme ‘you can’t afford to stay uninsured’ when taking to the roads has been launched by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau in the UK.
The campaign comes at a time when ways of detecting uninsured drivers more rigorous and penalties for uninsured driving are becoming harsher.
The campaign, named ‘Stay Insured’, is created in an attempt to drive home the message to stay insured as a driver, or face the serious consequences.
It emphasises the dangers that young motorists pose not only for themselves, but also for other drivers and pedestrians. The campaign is targetted mainly at young drivers and hopes to emphasise the importance insurance and the need to drive responsibly.
It is found that more than one-third of drivers without cover fall under the 30 years old or below age bracket. The experts also see young people as a high risk group because of their lack of motoring knowledge and road experience.
The Motor Insurers’ Bureau pays out compensation to accident claims victims of drivers who have no insurance cover.
In 2008, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau paid £380 million in accident claims. However, the total expenditure of uninsured drivers in the UK was estimated to be around £500 million per year, which highlights the need for such an awareness campaign.
