New invention for car accidents

The Government has created a new driving force that will set the wheels rolling on new safety options for cars. As part of its long fight against traffic jams and car accidents, the European Commission has decided to reserve part of the radio spectrum for smart vehicle communication systems.

These are also known as co-operative systems and will be put into place across Europe. They work on wireless communication technology. This technology allows the cars to ‘talk’ to other cars and to the road communications providers. Hence, they can warn other drivers of a crash that has happened or slippery roads. The smart vehicle communication system has the possibility to make driving easier and safer. In 2006, more than 42,000 people died due to a road accident in the European Union.

Viviane Reding a spokesperson for EU Telecoms stated that the system: “is a decisive step towards meeting the European goal of reducing road accidents.”

She furthered this by claiming: “Getting critical messages through quickly and accurately is a must for road safety.”

Everyday there are 7,500km of traffic jams on the EU’s roads, which the system states it could reduce. Reding stated that “24% of Europeans driving time is spent in traffic jams the costs caused by congestion could reach €80 billion by 2010.”

By saving time through smart vehicles communications systems also means that money will be saved. The system  will be allocated within the next six months by national authorities.
