A cyclist who was left paralysed after being knocked from his bike by a motorway sweeper has received a £200’000 accident claim payout.
Dr Glyn Powell, 58, was riding to work on the A19 near Selby, North Yorkshire, when he was hit by the sweeper.
Dr Powell spent several months in hospital, including ten days in intensive care, and has only gained partial mobility since the November 2005 accident.
The collision occurred when Mr Powell was hit on the back of his head by the sweeper’s wing mirror. The blow was so fierce that Mr Powell suffered bleeding on the brain and later suffered a stroke.
Through his trade union’s personal injury specialists, Mr Powell has been awarded compensation worth over £200’000.
“I’ve always been fit and active and I’ve lost that, so no amount of money would be adequate to compensate me for that, but in terms of my head being better and given my financial situation, I’m quite happy with it,” said Mr Powell. Updated on 03/06/2008
